After recently helping a client set up their social media pages (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest) I received a fair question from another client in regards to the necessity of using certain social media outlets like Pinterest. Because this is a great question, I wanted to share a few bits of wisdom in hopes that my readers (and future clients) will feel more knowledgeable about the relationship between SEO and Social Media.

So, why is using Pinterest (for example) important? Aren’t Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram the most important social media sites for marketing purposes?

Curious Client

Although Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook are a few of the most important social media outlets for marketing purposes – product and photo-driven businesses especially should take advantage of as many free online advertising tools as possible due to the possibility of link-backs to your website. More link-backs to your website usually correlates to higher search engine results for your website due to the fact that search engines use popularity or multiple link-backs as a tool for judging whether your website is worth listing higher than other website in search engine results. For example, Pinterest lets you list your website link right under your Name/Header on Pinterest – this is your main link-back from Pinterest. Also, when you pin photos/products directly from your website or list your website link in the photo’s description, it creates another link-back to your website.

While posting on Pinterest may not be absolutely necessary, Pinterest does give you a way to publicly shape your brand by solidifying your company’s overall style, image, interests, and direction. Ultimately, it is up to you whether or not you would like to take advantage of using Pinterest, but I would highly recommend it since it helps with Search Engine Optimization.
